Sunday Salon: The TBR Dare. Are You Brave Enough to Take the Dare?

The TBR Dare is open for registration.

This is not a reading challenge.  It's a dare.

I dare you to pledge you will read only the books in your TBR (To Be Read) stack for as long as you dare starting January 1, 2011.

One hour, one day, one book, one week, one month, or until the dare ends on April 1.  (I never make open-ended New Year's Resolutions.  Every goal should have a end date.)

For complete information about the TBR Dare, I've set up a page here.  Unfortunately, if there's a way to leave comments on Blogger pages, I have not figured it out here.  So, this will be the official registration page.

To register for The TBR Dare leave a comment below.  Let us all know what your TBR resolution is in your comment--one hour, one day, one book, one week, one month, or the full enchilada.  The TBR Dare ends on April 1.  Because we're all fools for taking a dare like this one, we know it and we celebrate it.

If you can, please post one of the pictures/buttons with a link on your blog to help spread the word.

The winner gets a trip to Cancun* and the losers get to read whatever they want to.

*Not really.  But it's more fun with a cool vacation get-a-way as a prize.

Coming later this week: The Hop-a-long, Git-a-long, Read-a-long, Western Challenge. (See page tabs for details.)

I think I am going to take this dare. Assuming that I get a pass for book club books, and of course audios don't count because I get all of those from the library. But no ARCs, no new purchases, no nuthin. I've been wanting to read from my shelves (and floor) for a long time now and I'm resentful that I can't. I'm going to think about this, but I might even take it through until April...

I'll take the dare too. All reads from my TBR with the exception of book club reads for six weeks starting Jan 01.

No point extending myself further as I am not going to deprive myself of Teresa Solana's 2nd novel (due Feb 10).

Like Sandy, I'd need a pass for book club books. As much as I'd like to get them to read from my stacks, that's unlikely to happen. Same with audios, which I rent and therefore don't keep on hand--but no audios that aren't already in my audio queue. But this aligns so closely with the personal challenge I'm setting for myself that I have to join in. And I'll be shooting for the whole enchilada. I'll be sure to mention the dare when I post on my 2011 goals.

And now I'm thinking I need to head back to the library book sale and pick up that copy of the Odyssey for the Classics Circuit, just in case.

I'm taking the dare, and I'm starting now and going until Jan 31!

Can't wait to see how everyone does! I'd love to participate, except I know that for my book clubs those months I'll have to check out library books so that won't work for me. Ah well.

On the other hand, I do plan to post all the owned TBR and virtual TBR books I have to my blog at the end of the year and will use that to hold myself accountable to my TBR!

Jeane said...

I'm going to do it! Dare myself to last through April. I wonder how many shelves I can clear. I haven't posted about this yet but will definitely link back here when I do.

JoAnn said...

I'm in and will read from my tbr until April Fool's Day! Hope Sandy's exceptions for book club selections and audio books are OK. I'll need those, too.

readerbuzz said...

I will take that dare! However, I know that I will not make it past the first day....

I'm in and have posted here: http://katrinasreads.blogspot.com/2010/12/tbr-dare.html about it. 25 books from mount tbr rather than a fixed time - is it bad that I'm thinking I need to buy a few books this week so that I can still participate in a few of the challenges? Oh and I'd forgotten bookgroup reads..they may have to be my exception as I run the bookgroup.

I'll give it a shot for first quarter 2011. I have more than enough books to make it that long. And, hee, I know for a fact I'm getting books for Christmas (since I was tasked with doing all my parents' Christmas shopping), and those will be on the TBR shelves by Jan. 1 too.

Oh James.... I know I should do this, so I'm definitely signing up. As for how long I'll last, that's a dang fine question. I think I'll try for the first three months....

Erin said...

Great idea! I have to make sure I can do it with a few projects and challenges I have going, but I'm pretty sure I'll be signing up. I was just bemoaning the fact that I have way too many unread books on my shelves.

Gavin said...

Okay, I'm in, at least through January...

Carina said...

I'm in, for as long as I can manage. :-)

ds said...

I will take your dare. The books thank you...

Ash said...

Okay I will agree to only read books on my TBR stack for the entire month of January. That is the only promise I can make haha.

This obviously doesn't include books I have to read for school.

Alexandra said...

I can't... not.strong.enough!

I am in! I gotta read the Marquez novels on my TBR pile!

LifetimeReader said...

I pledge only to read things on my plan lists or about my plan lists, or a prearranged book review, for 6 weeks. And then I might read a little vacation book from my tbr pile. Can this count for the challenge?

Amanda said...

What a great dare! I really needed a kick in the butt to do this - Mount TBR is out of control. My sign-up post is here.

brideofthebookgod said...

I am going to take the dare because it starts on 1 January which means any Christmas presents will already be on my TBR pile and will keep going until 31 January which is my birthday and I will get books as presents then as well.

JmfC said...

I just added 5 new books to my to-read list today, and I just started following your blog. Timing couldn't be perfect. I'm in! The whole deal!

Amy said...

I have no idea if I will be able to last, but I can't resist - I am in!

Erin said...

I'm back to declare my intention to join! I pledge to read only books from my TBR pile for as long as I can, with the exception of books I need for challenges or projects to which I've already committed. These books I pledge to get from the library, so as to lighten the burden on my shelves and my wallet!

talesofabookaddict said...

I'm in! Definitely looking forward to this dare because I have a huge TBR pile that I need to start working on. :)

I really want to try this. However, I'll have to make exceptions for my book clubs and for the three books that I have on hold at the library -- I'm way down on the list for At Home by Bill Bryson and there are two others that I'm sure I won't get by the end of the year.

Wow, that's a lot of exceptions. But I'm going to try and do this for three months. Hopefully some of my book group selections will be from my shelf.

Must get to work and finish all my library books by the end of the year!

Bybee said...

OK...I'll tackle my TBR for the month of January. That's a manageable goal. I'm looking forward to making a stack of my treasures.

Vasilly said...

Count me in! Starting today until the last day of this challenge, I'm hoping to read at least 25 books from my tbr pile.

Lit Addicted Brit said...

What an amazingly simple idea that may save my partner's sanity! I'm very much in and looking forward to enjoying some of my books and clearing some space!! I'm going to go for at least January and then as long as I can after that - we'll see how long I last...

Adam said...

Hey - this is great! I don't know if you've had a chance to check out my 2011 TBR Challenge, but it's basically along these lines, and there are prizes involved.

Since you're planning this anyway, sort of, it might be cool for you to get involved! Here's the sign-up page, if you're interested: http://tinyurl.com/2ckugm5

I will take your dare, too - I have 12 books on my challenge (one per month in 2011), so I'll make it a goal to get through at least 4 for the April deadline of THE DARE! :)

Melody said...

OK, I'm in! :)

Thanks for hosting this!

gaskella said...

I'll commit from Jan 1st until I fail, or the end of March, whichever comes soonest! I may need a pass for book club books too, otherwise I shall try to be good.

Amanda said...

All right, I've signed up! http://zenleaf.amandagignac.com/2010/12/tbr-dare.html

Amanda said...

Um, I take back my last comment. While I plan to read primarily from my shelves this year, I realized I had more exceptions than following the rules and was already getting antsy in a way I don't want to do about challenges this year, so I deleted my sign up post. Sorry about that...I'll just participate unofficially. :D

nathaliefoy said...

I'm in. I tried giving up buying new books last year and failed spectacularly, but I'm ready to try again! What was it Beckett said? "Try again, fail better." I pledge to read only from the TBR pile until April 1. In for a penny, in for a pound.

Saucy Wench said...

TBR, you've met your match! I'm in for January (and hopefully longer).

Alison said...

I'm in for the whole thing. http://tea-with-books.blogspot.com/2010/12/taking-tbr-dare.html

I think I'm going to try for the whole thing (with the exception of book club books, and maybe one other one, I have to think about it).

I've been waffling on this, but I've finally decided to join in, seeing as I want to read a bunch of the books already on my shelves anyway! I'll be brave and aim for the whole enchilada!

eMily said...

I am in for the full enchilada! Can't wait to tackle these shelves, thanks for hosting the dare!

This challenge/dare is just what I need! :)

I'm hoping to get as far into Feb as I can, just reading from my current TBR pile!

fantaghiro23 said...

It's not too late to join, is it? I'm in until the end of February. If it works out, will see if I can do until the dare's end.

Thanks for hosting this. It's the perfect thing for me.

Thomas at My Porch said...

I know I am late, but I am going for the full enchilada as well. (I could go for an enchilada right now.)

Hey, if you have a chance, could you link my registration to my book blog (www.newcenturyreading.com) and not my (defunct) knitting blog, Knit Think.
Thanks!

I'm in for the full enchilada! Thanks for hosting the challenge--it's the first one I've signed up for this year. :) I put the posting on my Book Challenges 2011 page on my blog.

I'm not sure on which post I commented on, but just in case that comment got lost, I'm joining for the full enchilada. I finished one already, a book I've had since late 2008 or early 2009. Thanks!

I'm taking the dare! Started January 1 and going to April 1. I am only reading books on my shelf -- no libraries and no new acquisitions. I can only download a free ebook classic to read if I also have a hard copy on my shelf too (I have plenty of those!!). Will post on it soon and include a link here.

This is just for me, though. I'll still use the library for picture books for my son, since we easily get 30 new ones a week from the library.
